Recognizing Melissa Sieminski

I would like to recognize Melissa Sieminski. I would like to bring attention to Melissa Sieminski of Scituate, MA who is a volunteer for the MA Bay Chapter of the American Red Cross. She dedicates more volunteer hours than any volunteer I have met in the chapter. Melissa is the team leader for the South Zone on Wednesday evenings. She welcomes all new volunteers and freely recognizes the volunteerism of all of the members of the team. Melissa exemplifies the concept of a leader. She encourages the RA's and rotating team leaders on Wednesday to step up and learn our roles, while simultaneously standing behind us with any and all support we need to take the steps of leadership. She never engages in self-aggrandizement, but quickly sends accolades to her team. If Melissa is busy with another Red Cross volunteer activity in lieu of merely stating her prior commitment, she makes sure the Wednesday night team is covered. Melissa is also involved in so many other Red Cross volunteer leadership positions; I truly cannot keep track of them. Melissa leads the MA care committee for our chapter. She assumed the leadership role in the distribution function during the floods. Melissa regularly goes on national deployment representing our chapter in the most favorable light. When I think of all that Melissa does on a regular basis, I think the Red Cross should hire her as a full time employee. Accolades to Melissa Sieminski and thank you for being such a wonderful mentor to us on the Wednesday night DAT, South Zone.

Youth Talent Competition - Hope for Haiti

This friendly competition showcases youth from our coverage area and gives them a platform to perform through theater, dance, and music. All proceeds from the event will go to Red Cross disaster relief efforts in Haiti. We expect over 300 youth, families, and supporters of the Red Cross. This event is being organized by Youth Programs with help from our Youth Advisory Board (YAB) members. Members of the Youth Advisory Board will help to serve as masters of ceremonies for the event.

Rebecca began her year of service with the Chapter on February 8th. Rebecca is a 2009 graduate of Eckerd College (St. Petersburg, Florida) where she studied International Relations and was very involved with numerous volunteer programs.
Rebecca will be working to strengthen the Chapter’s partnerships with local communities and to build the Chapter’s capacity to provide disaster preparedness information to the public. She will work closest with our Community Disaster Education and Community Liaison programs. Welcome, Rebecca!

Individual Volunteer Plan

I just finished the interview portion of my Individual Volunteer Plan (IVP). It was probably one of the most helpful hours I have spent to-date discussing my involvement with the Red Cross. I've been happy with my role in the Red Cross, but I really didn't see how I fit in the big picture. My interview was with Megan Dickman. Megan and I talked about what I wanted to do. Did I want to remain doing what I was doing? Was I interested in the promotional path? After we talked I had a clear picture of where I fit in, where I wanted to go with my volunteering effort and how I was going to get there. For me, completing the steps of the IVP really made me feel like I have a place in the Chapter.

She is a Mass Bay Red Cross volunteer in the Disaster Mental Health division as an intern in training. She is also a volunteer on the South Zone DAT and on the Sunday day North Zone DAT. November is National Youth Involvement Month

It is important that youth get involved and continue to work together. You can participate in the challenges posted on the Red Cross website or educate your peers on how to make a difference, even a small one, in the lives of those who rely on Red Cross services. The American Red Cross depends on our youth volunteers to uphold Red Cross values and continue to help others.

In order to make a difference and real impact, it requires heart, teamwork and collaboration. This is what has guided the work of Red Cross youth volunteers since inception. Youth volunteers work alongside adult volunteers to help create a better environment for others. You can make a difference in your community and/or a community surrounding you by being active and encouraging other youth to follow your example. Please show others how passionate Red Cross youth can be and get involved!

Volunteers Deployed to Georgia Floods

ARCMB Volunteers Melissa Sieminski, Richard Bedgio, and Robin Young, and ARCMB staff member Megan Dickman have recently returned from deployments to assist in the relief efforts for flooding in Georgia. Melissa and Richard were both deployed as Bulk Distribution Supervisors (MC/BD/SV) and played instrumental roles in providing Mass Care assistance to clients. Robin was deployed as a Casework Supervisor (CLS/CC/SV), working on the front lines with other Red Cross volunteers and the clients affected by the wide-spread flooding. Megan was deployed as a Government Liaison (PS/LG/SV) Supervisor, working with liaisons from other non-profit and federal agencies to facilitate and provide relief to those affected by the disaster.

Thank you to all students who participated this summer in The Mass Bay Disaster Service Youth Corp Program.

During July and August, high school students worked with the American Red Cross of Massachusetts Bay Disaster Services through a community leadership program. The students developed the skills needed to take part in emergency incident responses and tried to help to educate community residents, families, friends and loved ones to be prepared. As a disaster services youth corps member, students made an impact in their community. We greatly appreciate their efforts.

The American Red Cross Responded to a Fire In Lynn

The American Red Cross of Mass Bay responded to the scene of a fire in Lynn. A team of trained Red Cross disaster volunteers provided emergency assistance to one family (five individuals) for food, clothing and temporary shelter.
When disaster strikes, the local Red Cross can be called on to meet with affected individuals to identify and help meet their immediate emergency needs. Typically, basic human needs such as a place to stay, food to eat, necessary replacement medication or health items, and clothes to wear are provided first. In addition to helping with physical survival needs, the Red Cross also offers emotional counseling to help those affected cope with disaster.

Summer Travel Safety

Road trips are popular throughout the summer. Your Red Cross would like to remind those hitting the highway to take the necessary safety tips for you and your loved ones.
Carry a first aid kit in your trunk.
Buckle up, slow down and do not drive if you have been drinking alcohol. If you plan on drinking, designate a driver who won’t drink
Be well rested and alert; give your full attention to the road.
Use caution in work zones.
Observe speed limits.
Make frequent stops.
Be respectful of other motorists and follow the rules of the road.
Clean your vehicle’s lights and windows to help you see well, especially at night.
Turn your headlights on as dusk approaches, or during inclement weather.
Find out how you would get information in the event of a disaster (local radio systems, emergency alert systems).
Pay attention to the weather forecast for your destination. Weather and travel web sites can help you avoid storms and other regional challenges that could impact your safety.
And last but not least let someone know your destination, your route and when you expect to arrive.

Storm Safety

Summer is a time for warm weather and for hurricane season. Did you also know it's the peak season for thunderstorms and lightning?
Your Red Cross has some steps for families to take to remain safe during lightning storms:

Keep an eye on the sky. Look for darkening skies, flashes of light, or increasing wind. Listen for the sound of thunder.
Listen to Weather Radio, commercial radio, or television for the latest weather forecasts and emergency updates.
If a storm is approaching:
Find shelter in a building or car. Keep car windows closed and avoid convertibles. Get out of mobile homes that can blow over in high winds.
Unplug appliances. Avoid using the telephone or any electrical appliances. Use battery-powered TVs and radios instead.
Avoid taking a bath or shower, or running water for any other purpose. Turn off the air conditioner.
If you are caught outside during a storm:
Try to reach a safe building.
Avoid high ground; water; isolated trees; and metal objects such as fences or bleachers.
Picnic shelters, dugouts and sheds are NOT safe.
If you are boating or swimming, get to land and find shelter immediately!
Make sure the place you pick is not subject to flooding.
When the storm is over:
Never drive through a flooded roadway.
Stay away from storm-damaged areas.
Listen to the radio for information and instructions

Disaster Youth Corp Kicks Off At Mass Bay

The Mass Bay Disaster Service Youth Corp Program is an exciting leadership program that introduces high school students from ages 14-18 to the work of the American Red Cross of Massachusetts Bay Disaster Services. This new venture is the first of it’s kind for the chapter and will run during the summer months of July and August. As a disaster services youth corps member, students will try to make an impact in the community while developing the skills needed to help take part in emergency incident responses and help to educate your community, families, friends and loved ones to be prepared for the unexpected.

Civil Air Patrol, Red Cross practice responding to storm disaster…

Close to 40 volunteers gathered on Sunday June 21st at the Massachusetts Civil Air Patrol headquarters at Plymouth Airport for a joint effort to ramp up on disaster preparedness. The drill, which was a stand-alone exercise specific to the densely settled coastal communities, helped Civil Air Patrol and American Red Cross volunteers hone the skills they’d need to deal if real devastation hits. This event was the largest gathering to date between two organizarions.
Rick Young, the Red Cross director of disaster assessment, said he was grateful for the disaster drill outputs and the fact that helping people to help themselves before a hurricane hits is an important and achievable goal as well.

Summer Holiday Tips

Summer is a time for family barbecues, fireworks and celebrations. The American Red Cross encourages you to take these helpful tips to ensure a safe and happy summer:

Firework safety: Never give fireworks to small children, and always follow the instructions on the packaging.
Keep a supply of water close-by as a precaution.
Make sure the person lighting fireworks always wears eye protection.
Light only one firework at a time and never attempt to relight "a dud."
Store fireworks in a cool, dry place away from children and pets.
Never throw or point a firework toward people, animals, vehicles, structures or flammable materials.
Stay at least 500 feet away from professional fireworks displays.
Leave any area immediately where untrained amateurs are using fireworks.

Safe Grilling:Make sure safety is a key ingredient at your barbecue by reading the following tips for safer grilling:
Use gas and charcoal barbecue grills outside only.
Position grills far from siding, deck railings, overhanging branches and house eaves.
Keep children and pets at least three feet away from the grill area.
Never add charcoal starter fluid when coals have already been ignited.
When using the grill, always follow the manufacturer's instructions.
Always supervise a barbecue grill when in use.

Local Red Cross Awarded $100,000 through VIRE Grant

The American Red Cross of Massachusetts Bay was recently awarded $100,000 in grants from HandsOn Network and the Corporation for National and Community Service (CNCS) as part of a new Volunteer Impact Retention and Expansion Initiative (VIRE). The grant will provide much needed resources to recruit, equip, train and mobilize volunteers. The ARC of Mass Bay was selected through a competitive grant process and comprehensive review to receive part of the findings. The acknowledged grant will allow the chapter to increase disaster volunteer capacity and expand volunteer leadership.

On June 11th, 2009 the American Red Cross of Massachusetts Bay held its leadership orientation dinner at the New England Blood Services Headquarters in Dedham, MA for current and future volunteers. The orientation featured special guest speaker Ross Ogden, the American Red Cross National Chair of Disaster Services. This event introduced volunteers, both new and in existing leadership positions, to opportunities to advance themselves with the Red Cross volunteer system.

More than 75,000 votes were cast for the Red Cross, which earned our organization a share of $793,942. Nine other non-profits competed for a piece of Target's $3 million donation. Learn how be prepared, and how to respond to a hurricane watch or warning

June through August is the hurricane season. Therefore, the American Red Cross of Massachusetts Bay recommends that the community become familiar with hurricane watch and warning messages and plan ahead to reduce the chances of injury or major property damage. A hurricane watch is issued when weather conditions are favorable for a hurricane to impact a specific geographic area within 36 hours. A warning is issued when hurricane conditions are expected within 24 hours or less.

"I greeted people who were doing the walk and passed out lunch. It was really fun, and I got to see many animals at the zoo! Volunteering at this fundraiser really inspired me to want to help out others more. Next year, I definitely want to walk and raise money for people with kidney diseases!", she wrote.

Knowing what to do when your pet is choking or injured can be critical to save your pet's life. Thanks to the Red Cross, pet owners can equip themselves with first aid skills.

American Red Cross Pet First Aid classes give pet owners the confidence and skills necessary to tend to unexpected emergencies until they can get their pet to a veterinarian. The American Red Cross of Mass Bay offer classes with hands-on training in Pet First Aid procedures. The Pet First Aid class combines lecture, discussion, video and skill practice to provide participants with the knowledge and skills they need to provide care to their cat or dog in an emergency. Participants will receive either the Cat First Aid book and DVD set or the Dog First Aid book and DVD set, the Pets & Disasters: Be Prepared brochure and several worksheets.

We encourage you residing in the 190 cities and towns in eastern Massachusetts to send your stories to be published on our website www.bostonredcross.org . Each officially-posted submission will be entered into a raffle contest to win various prizes. Moreover, we will promote a Red Cross Youth Volunteer Recognition Event, in which raffles will be drawn for prizes and the most meaningful humanitarian act will receive an award. Like you, we have all been watching and listening to the reports about cases of the H1N1 Flu. Cases have been reported in Mexico and now in the United States. Here is some information you about our current response plan and what you can do to prevent:

This week (April 19-25), the American Red Cross celebrates the 2009 National Volunteer Week with the theme “Celebrating People in Action”. This topic captures the meaning behind this signature week – honoring the individuals who dedicate themselves to taking action and solving problems in their communities.
From the volunteers who respond to fires day and night, to the youth who coordinate community blood drives, to the instructors who teach life saving courses; we thank you. Your work has not gone unnoticed and is truly making a difference all across the world.
During this past year, hundreds of thousands of volunteers have answered calls to action, whether it is fundraising for our disaster relief fund, working various Red Cross initiatives, connecting people separated from their loved ones by natural disaster and armed conflict or supporting our troops with holiday messages.
We honor these dedicated volunteers that make an effort to make the world a better place. Thank you.

In an interview with Color Magazine this month, she reveals her close relationship with her family and how her parent’s involvement with their community inspired her to choose a philanthropic career. Moreover, she exposed her passion for her work and how her daily routine at the Red Cross motivates her professionally and personally. “I don’t have to do much to be reminded of why I keep working as hard as I do – because I love it. It is rewarding to me personally, and it really matters on the frontline”.

Red Cross launches Public Awareness Campaign

The American Red Cross of Mass Bay and the MBTA are promoting the Be Red Cross Ready public awareness campaign in Boston to disseminate the importance of preparing for a disaster before it strikes. The campaign is spreading the message to the millions of people who ride the MBTA each week who in turn will share this information with their family, friends and colleagues. It can be seen in 300 educational car cards system and will be up for the months of April and May. It encourages the three simple Be Red Cross Ready steps of 1. Get a kit; 2. Make a plan; 3. Be informed

The "Be Red Cross Ready" campaign is a part of a larger plan to help individuals and families prepare for unexpected emergencies through preparedness. This past year alone, your Red Cross educated 85,000 people through community disaster education.
